Beckham set to star in opening ceremony

With the Olympics opening ceremony now just over 24  hours away the whole world is wondering who is set to light the Olympic flame. Step forward David Beckham OBE, who in the eyes of TDF seems to be the most logical choice to light the flame. The former England captain is set to return to the UK fresh from defeating Chelsea with his MLS All-Stars 3-2.

Becks is the marketing man's dream choice. He is the face of both Samsung & Adidas, with the lighting of the Olympic flame almost certain to add to his $219 million pound fortune. His ties with Locog are also long standing having been the major face of the bid, even heading out to the final IOC decision in Singapore back in 2005. Thirdly and perhaps most importantly Beckham was born in Leytonstone, which is just minutes away from the Olympic Park.

However with London 2012's chief executive Paul Deighton just confirming that a "Great Olympian" is set to light the cauldron. It perhaps leaves Beckham's role as a mystery, with Slum Dog Millionaire director Danny Boyles "Isles of Wonder" show set to be released on a global audience of billions.

Beckham will still have a major role to play in the ceremony and indeed the whole games as an official brand ambassador for Samsung. Maybe Beckham will be smashing in some of his trademark free kicks at some point of proceedings, he may even decide a magical tune with his free-kicks (see the video below). It's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility with major sporting events opening gambits often including the weird and wonderful, especially judging by the Euro 2012 opening show which included a banging techno set.
